What is an Asteroid?
An asteroid is an object that can be the size of a sand-grain or about thousands of kilometers in size. Asteroids are located in are Solar System and like planets there have orbits that travel around the Sun. Within are Solar System, Asteroids are located in asteroid belts. A major asteroid belt of are solar system is located between the planets on Mars and Jupiter.
Asteroids are made out of leftover rock from different areas of the Solar System that collide together to form these massive rocks. However, these rocks were too small to make a planet, so we call these massive rocks, asteroids for that reason. Thats why asteroids are known as smaller planets. The materials that asteroids are made out of is mostly rocks, but some are made of carbon or metal. This is all dependent on what's on the surface of the asteroid. The different kinds of asteroid are defined to have types with there corrounding minerals, so Type M (Metal), Type S (Stone), and Type C (Carbon).
